How to speed up your internet Oman
Six ways to increase your internet connection speed

How to increase your internet speed ?

1. Check your computer and other devices accessing internet

Your computer, smartphones, Smart TV, IOT devices and tabs may have applications like Bittorrent, Dropbox, Onedrive, Google drive etc. that runs in the background and frequently connects to the internet to upload and download files. It badly affects your internet speed, So disable all such programs from startup or uninstall if not required.

2. Verify your WiFi settings.

Open your WiFi/router portal and check these settings

  • Your WiFi must use WPA2 encryption
  • WiFi password must be at least 13 characters long and the password must contain alphabets, numbers and special characters.

Do not leave your WiFi network open, without password. Setup password protection as mentioned above.

3. Your Web browser

Update your web browser (for eg : Google Chrome, Edge, Firefox etc) and clear cache of your web browser.

How to clear cache/history of Safari browser in iPhone?

Go to “Settings” -> Scroll down to “Safari” an tap -> Scroll down to “Clear History and Website Data”-> Tap “Clear history and Data”

4. Check your internet speed.

Disconnect all devices connected to your internet and then connect only one device to your router, using a ethernet network cable(Connect through WiFi if network port is not available). Go to Speedtest website and test your internet speed. Open your web browser and enter this address. https://www.speedtest.net/ and press enter. Click “Go” button to start the test. Repeat the test after connecting all other devices to your network.

5. Location of the WiFi Router

Walls, electrical equipment etc. weakens Wi-Fi signals and it affects the internet speed. So it is always better to keep your device and router in the same room or at line of sight for best performance. Reposition your WIFI to get optimum coverage. You can use Wi-fi extender or powerline adapter to extended WIFI coverage to other room and floors.

WiFi Router Placement Tips:

  • Place your WIFI router in a central location – This will helps WIFI signals to reach all parts of your home. Wi-Fi Routers transmit signals in all directions.
  • Fix the router in a higher place
  • Do not keep the router near other electronics and electrical devices
  • Thick walls or multiple walls weakens Wi-Fi signals
  • Use a sperate WiFi router – Most of the ISPs provide modem with WIFI router and it might be placed in a inconvenient location or that router might be not enough powerful to meet your needs. You can buy a new WiFi router, place it in a suitable central location in your home and connect it to that modem through a network cable. You will get a better WIFI coverage.

6. Other issues that might be affecting internet speed.

  • Old/outdated Router or Modem : In most cases old internet modem/router could be the culprit for slow internet. It’s time to buy a new modem/router.
  • Slow ISP DNS server : Your ISPs DNS server might be very slow to resolve your DNS queries. This will impact internet speed. Switch to free DNS services like Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS. These servers are very fast and secure. Here is the list of free public DNS servers.
  • Too many devices on the network: Remove CCTV, baby monitor and other unnecessary devices from the network. You can create a separate network for those devices.
  • Ongoing downloads like torrent, OS updates etc: Disable torrent seeding and schedule Operating System updated after midnight.
  • Signal interference from electrical appliances: Move modem away from such interferences
  • Old degraded wiring in your building or ADSL/copper service cable from the ISP: Switch to mobile home broadband 4G/5G plans available with your ISP or switch to FTTH (Fiber to The Home) plans.
  • Low quality/speed internet from service provider: Switch to another service provider or try FTTH plan.

6+. Change to high performance DNS Server

The Domain Name System (DNS) is similar to a phonebook. When you types in domain names such as ‘instagram.com’ or ‘google.com’ or ‘ebugg-i.com’ into your web browser, DNS will get into action to find the numerical address of those sites and returns it to the browser. Web browsers then use that address to communicate to the actual server of that website.

The best free and public DNS servers offer an alternative way to connect safely online with the added bonus of potentially accelerating your internet speed. DNS (Domain Name System) is a system which translates the domain names you enter in a browser to the IP addresses required to access those sites (PS: we have a number of questions and answers at the very end of this buyers guide).
