The phone’s proximity sensor is also placed on top of the camera lens, so it could be interfering with the microphone and sound quality by detecting that something is in front of it. The lack of a standard microphone on the iPhone XR, combined with the proximity sensor’s interfering with it, could be a contributing factor to the issue. The iPhone XR microphone is also primarily located on one side of the device close to the bottom of it rather than centrally located as most other iPhones are. The proximity sensor is not placed centrally, but does create an interference which could be contributing to the issue. It was also stated that the proximity sensor may have been moved in order to accommodate for a front-facing camera, which is not supported on an iPhone XR. The proximity sensor is still located centrally, and it could be interfering with sound quality as well as the microphone by detecting objects in front of it.
