How to reactivate Windows 10 After Hardware Change?
Please confirm these points, before you begin the troubleshooting.
- Logged as administrator
- Date and time is up-to-date in your PC
- Incase Windows was pre-installed on your laptop or desktop with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) version, then you can not use the license if you have changed motherboard/hardware. You have to purchase new license.
- But, if you have already connected your license to a Microsoft account before the hardware change, then you can reactivate your Windows using that license again.
- Can reactivate, if you upgraded from Windows 8 or 7 to Windows 10 with retail license.
Follow these steps to reactivate Windows after a hardware change.
Login as Administrator
Click “Start” menu -> Settings
Click “Update & Security“
Then click “Activation” option in the left pane.
Now you can see “Change product key” button in the left pane, click it .
Re-enter the product key for activation.
- Click Troubleshoot option in the right pane.
- Click Yes, if UAC prompt for confirmation
- Activation Troubleshooter will try to identify and fix the issue.
- Troubleshooter will list of options to select, then click “I changed hardware on this device recently”
- It will direct to Microsoft account login, enter using your credentials to sign in.
- Here you can see the devices linked to your ID, Select the right device you’re currently working on and then select the Activate button.
- Windows wil get activated now.
- After the process, Close the screen and restart your PC.. Done.
Now Windows will activate successfully and that error will disappear. Otherwise you follow next step for manual reactivation.
