Windows updates failing with error 80072EFD. System connects to the internet through a proxy with authentication.

Preliminary checks

  • Internet connectivity is ok
  • Able to access Windows Update website though proxy ; 80 & 443 ports are open
  • Turned off windows firewall
  • Antivirus disabled
  • Added the windows update sites to the trusted sites in IE settings
  • Installed System Update Readiness Tool

How to solve Windows update error 80072EFD ?

1. Registry check:

Open regedit.exe (backup registry before any change) and verify these entries (WUServer, WUStatusServer). Make sure those entries are pointing to the correct WSUS location. if not, correct it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Now restart the system and try to update Windows. Follow the next step if failed.

2. Check Windows Update Log for error

C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log

3. Reset WinSock

Open command prompt as administrator and execute these commands

netsh winsock reset
netsh winhttp reset proxy

If you are using a proxy server, then configure proxy using this command shown below.

netsh winhttp set proxy :

Try Windows Update; try next step if Windows update failed.

4. Reset Windows Update Agent and Configuration
