Common Causes Of System Restore Failures and its solutions.

Low disk space to perform system restore

Make sure you have sufficient space in your C drive to perform the restore operation. We recoommed atleast 20 GB of free space.

Antivirus software might be interrrupting the restore process

Antivirus software may prevent system changes as part of its protection mechanism. So temporarily disable or uninstall Antivirus protection.

Inccorrect System Protection settings

Verify and correct System Protection settings .

Windows System file corruption or missing

Windows System files may get corrupted or gione missing because of malware attack or due to harddisk corruption. Run SFC fix system file issues and DISM commands to restore system image.

System restore point file loss or corruption

The restore point you are trying to restore is corrupted or lost. In this case it is not possible to restore the image. you may have to select a differnt restore point created prior or after the intended restore point.

Safe Mode System Restore

Boot into safemode and try system restore.

Follow the steps mentioned below if you had verified all these points mentioned above.

Unisntall Third Party Performance Tuning App.

Go to Control panel -> Programs and Features then uninstall tuneup app. for eg: TuneUp Utilities 2009 / 2010 / 2011

Restart the PC after the successful removal of the program and try system restoration again. Follow the next step if the restoration failed.

Start Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service

Open the command prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator, then copy the command given below and paste it into the command prompt, press enter key to start the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service.

net start swprv
Start system restore shadow copy service
Start system restore shadow copy service

Activate Automatic Startup Type For Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service

Copy the following command -> paste into the command prompt and press enter key.

sc config swprv start=auto
Shadow copy service Change To Automatic Startup type
Shadow copy service Change to automatic startup

Verify “UpperFilters” Parameter

Fisrt of all, take full backup of your registry and be careful while editing registry.

Check this registry entry and make sure “volsnap” value is set for “UpperFilters”. Update if it is missing.

You can either check this through command prompt or thorugh regedit.

Copy this command given below, paste it in to command prompt and press enter key.

reg QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}" /V "UpperFilters"

If the “volsnap” value is missing, then open regeidt as administrator , Navigate to this key

Double click “UpperFilters” , enter the text volsnap and press ok to save the changes.

Restart your computer and try system restore again.
