Before you begin
- Make sure that your id has Administrator power.
- Date & Time of your PC is correct
- Use Disk Cleanup tool to delete all temporary files
- Windows Update URLs are allowed in Web filter software & Corporate firewall
- Add “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” folder to Antivirus Exception list.
- You have active internet connection and you are able to access Windows Update URLs.
- Download and run “Microsoft Safety Scanner“
- Temporarily disable Antivirus & Windows firewall (Optional)

1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
Windows 10 has built-in Windows update troubleshooter tool, that can fix issues related to Windows update.
How to run Windows 10 troubleshooter tool ?
Go to “Windows Settings” (Press Windows key + i) -> Click “Update & Security” -> select “Troubleshoot” option

Select “Windows Update” troubleshoot option.
Now Update troubleshooter will start and identify issues.

2. Repair Windows Update system files using DISM tool
Open command prompt as administrator, Copy and paste this command given below.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
It may several minutes to complete the repair process. After the repair process, try Windows Update. Follow the next step, if the update failed with error 0x8024402F.
3. Scan your system files for corruption
Run System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Open command prompt as administrator and run SFC /scannow command

4. Check file system integrity
Run CHKDSK command to verify the integrity of file system and fix logical file system errors. CHKDSK will also check for bad sectors in your hard disk and it will try to recover and relocate the damaged sector. Windows Update error “0x8024402F” may occur if a files that belongs to Windows Update components is affected by a bad sector. Open command prompt as administrator and run this command .

CHKDSK may show this message “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)” , then enter “Y” and restart your computer. During the reboot process CHKDSK will scan the file system for errors and it tries to recover any errors.
Now try Windows Update and if the error persist, then follow the next step.
5. System Update Readiness tool to fix 0x80070246 error.
For Windows 7 & Windows server 2008, if your OS is Windows 10 , then skip to next step.
Download appropriate System Update Readiness tool package from “Microsoft Update Catalogue” for your operating system. Make sure you select the right version and architecture suitable for your OS. Install the downloaded package to repair the Windows Update components.

Click “Yes” and complete the installation process.

6. Reset “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” folder
Open Command prompt as administrator and enter these commands in the given order
Stop services related to Windows Update
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
net stop DcomLaunch
Delete all contents in “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” folder
Navigate to this location and delete all contents in this folder.
Reboot the PC and Update Windows. Windows update should be ok by now.
Additional Info
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile package might be the culprit in some cases. So unintstall this package and try Windows Update.
Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features.
Locate the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.
Right click and then select Uninstall/Change.
