Before you begin

  • Make sure you backup your important files to an external storage device.
  • Login to user account with administrator privilege /power. For Windows Home editions, use the default account.

1. Run CHKDSK to check file system integrity

Run CHKDSK command to verify the integrity of file system and fix logical file system errors. CHKDSK will also check for bad sectors in your hard disk and it will try to recover and relocate the damaged sector. Open command prompt as administrator and run this command .

CHKDSK may show this message “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)” , then enter “Y” and restart your computer. During the reboot process CHKDSK will scan the file system for errors and it tries to recover any errors.

2. Run Disk Cleanup tool to free up storage space

Disk cleanup tool will help us to automatically delete temporary files, recycle bin, temporary internet files, delete files in download folder etc.

Go to This PC [ Start menu->Documents->In right pane you can see “This PC”]

If you don’t have sufficient disk space, then use “Disk Cleanup” feature to remove unwanted files.

Select file types from “File to delete” option

  • Downloaded Program Files – Tick this option to delete ActiveX controls and Java applets downloaded automatically from the internet when you view certain pages. They are temporarily stored in Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.
  • Temporary Internet Files folder contains webpages stored on your hard disk for quick viewing, Your personalized settings for webpages will be left intact.
  • Windows error reports and feedback diagnostics files are generated from Windows Errors and user feedback
  • DirectX Shader cache – Clean up files created by graphics system which can speed up application load time and improve responsiveness. They will be re-generated as needed.
  • Delivery Optimization Files are files that were previously downloaded to your computer and can be deleted if currently unused by Delivery Optimization service.
  • Downloads – Tick this this to delete all files in your Download folder.
  • Recycle Bin – To remove files you have deleted from your computer. These files are note permanently removed until you empty Recycle Bin.
  • Temporary files– Apps can store temporary information in specific folders. These can be cleaned up manually if the app does not do it automatically.
  • Thumbnails – Windows keeps a copy of all your picture, video and document thumbnails so they can be displayed quickly when you open folder. if you delete these thumbnails, they will be automatically recreated as needed.

Click “OK” button after selecting all required files for deleting. Then system will popup “Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files ?“, click Yes to start the cleanup.

3. Check C: Drive space

Since the C: drive is our main partition, make sure you have at least 10 GB to 20 GB free space available in C drive. Move data to an external drive to free up some space.

4. Anti-Malware Scan

Malwares like viruses can cause havoc in your PC. Download Microsoft Safety Scanner and run a complete through scan. Run it in safe mode for more efficient check. Restart your PC.

Download and install System Update Readiness Tool. The System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR) is a tool from Microsoft that can fix a lot of issues related to Windows Update. System Update Readiness Tool repairs Windows Update system files and registry settings. It will automattically fix problems related to Windows Update.

7. Run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool

Open Command prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator, type this DISM command given below and press enter key.

It may sometime to complete the process. DISM will scan and identify the corrupted files, then it will try to replace the corrupted files by downloading new files through Windows Update process. If the Windows update client is already corrupted then you may have to download the latest System Update Readiness Tool and install it to fix corrupted files. Make sure you have internet connection.

8. Run SFC to scan and repair Windows system files

Run System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

9. System Restore

Restore your system to a restore point created before this problem has started. This step is more critical one, applications installed and settings configures after that restore point may loose after this process. How to restore Windows 10 to an earlier restore point ?

10. Windows 10 Reset

6. Reset this PC have two options

  • Keep my files – This option will remove “Apps and settings” only, it keeps your personal files safe (even though we reccomend you to back up your personal files to an external hard disk).
  • Remove everything – Removes all of your personal files, apps and settings

  1. Click “Keep my files” option to start Windows 10 rest this PC process.
  2. In newer versions , you may prompt to select the installation source , “Cloud download” or “Local reinstall”.

If you choose this option, Windows will download all its necessary installation files from the cloud.
I will recommend this option if you have a high speed internet connection and because it will download latest files from Microsoft’s server for Windows installation, this will be around 4GB of data. This is the more reliable method, local files might have chance for corruption.

Local reinstall

If you choose this option, Windows will source files from your device.

  1. Choose your option and continue
  2. if you have upgraded from an older Windows OS (7 or 8), Windows will warns you that you won’t be able to roll back to a prior version of the OS. Click “Next” to continue.
  3. In next screen you can see “Reset” button, click this button to start the Reset process. The Reset this PC process will take several minutes to complete. Usually the whole process will complete without any issues.

Try Windows Update again. The error should be gone by now, otherwise it is a hardware issue, its time to change the storage device.

11. Hard drive/SSD fault

We have tried all possible ways to rectify this issue, If still it is unresolved then its time to change to your storage drive. Get a new SSD and clean install Windows 10.
