  • In previous device Windows 10 activated with either a digital license or with license key.
  • Windows was pre-installed on your laptop or desktop with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) version. Then you can not use the license if you have changed motherboard/hardware. You have to purchase new license.

Confirm Windows 10 Edition – Avoid Wrongful Activation

You have to make sure that Windows 10 edition you installed is the same before and after your hardware change. For example you cannot use Windows 10 Home Edition license to activate Windows 10 Pro. Digital license and product key will reactivate only if the edition remains the same. “Windows reported that no product key was found on your device 0xC004F213” this error will show if you are trying to activate wrong Windows 10 edition. You can see your edition on the same Activation page where you checked your activation status. To see which edition you have, select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Activation .

In addition, Microsoft provides an exception path for transferring a Windows License after a hardware change. You’ll need to be signed in to the same Microsoft account before making the hardware change and to use the exception path.

To access this exception path, select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation , and then select Troubleshoot. If the troubleshooter can’t resolve the issue, you’ll see a link to reactivate after a hardware change. Select it to follow this path.
