A caption is a numbered label you may follow to objects, equations, and tables inside your files. This makes it easy to reference within your text and can be recognized label on your item without difficulty. Captions in word to documents elements can be easily added automatically to label them.

STEP 1: Click the “References” tab in Ribbon.

STEP 2: Then click the “Insert Caption” button in the “Captions” button group to open the “Caption” dialog box.

Choose the label to use from the “Label:” drop-down to show your selection in the “Caption:” text field.

Check the “Exclude label from caption” checkbox if you want to display only the number of captions.

Click the “New Label…” button to open the “New Label” dialog box to create a new label.

Enter a name in the “Label:” field and click “OK” to add your new label to the “Label:” list.

Click the “Numbering…” button to open the “Caption Numbering” dialog box if you want to change the caption’s numbering.

STEP 3: Click “AutoCaption” and another dialog box will be opened.

STEP 4: Check the checkboxes in the dialog box to choose what type of objects to automatically caption.

Use the drop-downs and buttons in the “Options” section to set the formatting for the captions.

Click “OK” to save your settings.

The next time you insert an object that matches a selection in the “AutoCaption” dialog box, Word automatically inserts a caption with that object.
